There are few things I enjoy in life as much as I enjoy Saturday mornings. Saturday is usually the break in our routine; it is the day when we get to change things up and enjoy relaxing just a little more than usual. I absolutely refuse to set my alarm clock on Saturday mornings, thus allowing me to enjoy the morning as I wake up to the sound of the birds chirping outside … or my children getting antsy for Monte and I to wake up and making lots of noise to make sure that happens!
Regardless of how or what time we wake, the one thing that is always consistent about Saturdays is that they are our pancake or waffle day! Monte will start cooking a pan of bacon, as well as the pancakes or waffles for the kids. Since I am not a pancake fan, as the syrup is too sweet for me, I typically will start my day out with a cup of coffee and help Monte serve breakfast to the kids.
Having all four kids enjoying breakfast at the same time often causes someone (usually Colin!) to say, “Daaadddddd, I’m ready for my next pancake!” as the next batch is still cooking. This is one of many sounds that are common in our home on Saturday mornings. The remaining sounds are those of the newspaper shuffling as the kids read it, slurping of milk and the scraping of forks along plates, as well as the happy chatting of our kids. Our home is rarely a quiet one, and Saturday mornings are definitely no exception!
Once the kids have finished eating and have put their dishes in the dishwasher, I start cooking breakfast for Monte and me. Our breakfast usually consists of eggs, bacon (for Monte) and toast. This is one of my favorite parts of the weekend, as it allows Monte and me to have some quiet time alone while enjoying our breakfast. Sometimes we will read the paper together and work on the crossword puzzle, and other times we just enjoy each other’s company in silence. This is the perfect picture of Saturday morning in our home, and I treasure it completely!
Sunday morning seems to bring with it a more mid-week feel, as we are all usually rushing to get ready for church. Typically, we resort to the easiest breakfast we have on hand: cereal! I’m thankful for all of the many varieties of cereal that are offered, as it would end up being something that we would easily tire of if it were always the same.
Our weekend breakfast routine varies from our mid-week routine just slightly; what does your weekend breakfast routine look like?

Usually on a weekend my 4 y.o. son and I make a simple breakfast bread with raisins, candied ginger, and pineapple. He measures the flour very carefully and reminds me to put in the baking powder and a pinch of salt. He always begs for a taste of sugar (which I always decline). He also gets to mix- his favorite part. He also loves to grease the bread pan and most of all he loves to lick the spoon afterwards. The only thing is he can never wait for it to bake or cool down- he is ready to eat as soon as it gets in the oven.

That is one of my most favorite past times. My parents divorced when I was very young, so when I would have weekends with my dad, we would wake up EVERY Saturday morning and make waffles together, for years. He does that now for his grand-daughter when we are there visiting.
ReplyDeleteUsually I try to make muffins... nothing fancy but something that does take a little more time than I have on weekdays.

We usually sleep a little later on the weekends. I like to make something for breakfast and then eat it in bed - even if it is a bowl or cereal or peanut butter toast. I also love pancakes! If we leave early to run errands, we might stop at Einsten Bros. for a bagel or Chick-Fil-A for a chicken biscuit. Yum!
ReplyDeleteWeekdays are pitiful but on the weekends it's big bruches filled with biscuits & gravy, or eggs, bacon, hash browns or whipped cream pancakes or waffles.
ReplyDeletetamben7996(at)aol(dot)com
Weekends are the only day of the week we take the time to sit down and enjoy breakfast together as a family. Too much commotion during the weekdays trying to get ready for school and work.
ReplyDeleteI normally do a big breakfast on Saturday mornings also. But during the week it's cereal for everyone!

ReplyDeleteToday I made steel-cut oats, a very-time consuming process; and, unfortunately, my son doesn't like them. A typical weekend breakfast for us is either french toast with crisp bacon (that I've made) or sausage with pancakes or waffles (that Dad has made). We cook on Saturday usually and if we have enough time before Church, we also cook on Sunday mornings.

ReplyDeleteIt would be a real stretch to say we have a weekend routine. Our weekend routine is pretty much being lazy. That's not very fancy, is it? We do enjoy a good breakfast, though. We like the whole omelet, pancake, sausage links breakfast. With orange juice, please.
ReplyDeleteOur hectic life ended when our 2 daughters moved out of state. We keep in touch by phone now.
ReplyDeleteSaturdays we usually just have cereal (I have oatmeal with raisins, and my husband has cold cereal.) Plus juice. Nothing exciting.
Come Sunday morning I get up earlier, and get ready for church before coming downstairs to make breakfast.
I either make pancakes or eggs, with toast and strawberry jam, plus juice and I love a cup of hot tea early in the morning.
All that "good stuff", like bacon etc. disappears, once you get older. Too much cholesterol. Everything changes as you get older. Wait and see! But if your life is good, you can handle the bad times.
Yum! I LOVE BREAKFAST! I keep mine pretty simple during the week: lowfat vanilla yogurt, raspberries and homemade healthy granola. I like to get a bit fancier on the weekend with homemade breakfast sandwiches: toasted/buttered english muffin, scrambled eggs with some roasted garlic and a slice of sharp cheddar! AND COFFEE!!
